Relative frequency estimates probability from experimental results, as successes ÷ trials, improving as the number of trials increases. It's a core topic in GCSE and iGCSE Maths with Edexcel and the other major boards. How you do it

Divide the number of times the outcome happened by the number of trials. The more trials, the closer this gets to the true probability. Multiply by the number of trials to predict how often it will happen again.

Before you start

It draws heavily on basic probability and fractions. You meet it at Foundation and Higher tier. It underpins expected frequency and experimental data.

What you learn

When we can’t simply count equally likely outcomes, we estimate a probability from an experiment using relative frequency. This is also called the experimental probability. The more trials you carry out, the closer the relative frequency tends to get to the true probability. The course works through relative frequency, more trials, better estimate and judging fairness. Every section has instant-feedback practice questions matched to Edexcel iGCSE 4MA1 and the other major GCSE boards, and the course finishes with full exam-style questions you mark yourself.
