Venn Diagrams

Online Maths Courses

Quick Links

This topic uses Venn diagrams to sort data into sets and reads union, intersection and complement from the diagram to solve problems and find probabilities. It's a core topic in GCSE and iGCSE Maths with Edexcel and the other major boards. This free interactive course teaches the method with worked examples and gives instant-feedback practice questions to lock it in.

How you do it

Fill the overlap first, then work outwards, subtracting so nothing is counted twice. Anything in neither set goes outside the circles but inside the box. Read probabilities by counting the relevant region over the total.

Before you start

Assumed knowledge: basic probability and set vocabulary. From here the path runs to set notation and conditional probability.

What you learn

A Venn diagram shows how two groups overlap. Each region tells you how many are in one group, in both, or in neither. A whole circle is everyone in that group — including the overlap. When you’re given totals, start with the overlap (both), subtract to get the ‘only’ regions, then find ‘neither’ last. Once the regions are filled, P(event) = matching region total ÷ grand total. The course works through the regions of a Venn diagram, filling in a Venn diagram and probabilities from a Venn diagram. Every section has instant-feedback practice questions matched to Edexcel iGCSE 4MA1 and the other major GCSE boards, and the course finishes with full exam-style questions you mark yourself.

Related Topics

We teach Venn Diagrams as one of the Probability topics in our GCSE course library, at Foundation tier. It runs to 3 concepts, each followed by a check, with 2 worked examples along the way. It sits alongside Venn Diagrams & Set Notation, Without Replacement, And / OR rules and Basic Probability in the same strand. You can drill this strand further on the Probability revision engine, with your accuracy saved to your skill tree.
