GCSE maths tuition for Edexcel, AQA and OCR students in the UK and UAE
The single decision that shapes a GCSE maths grade is not how hard a student works. It is which tier they are entered for. Foundation tier caps at grade 5. A student capable of a 6 who is entered for Foundation cannot achieve one, however well they perform. A student entered for Higher who is not ready for it can walk out of two papers having attempted half the questions. Most of the tuition conversations we have in Year 10 and Year 11 come back to this.
Foundation or Higher: the decision that sets the ceiling
Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5. The content is narrower and the questions more structured. Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9, with a safety net at grade 3. It includes content Foundation never sees — surds, algebraic fractions, circle theorems, histograms, quadratic formula work. The practical questions are these. Is a grade 5 on Foundation more likely than a grade 5 on Higher? Does the student need a 6 or above for their sixth form or college course? Is there enough time left to close the gap to Higher content? Schools usually decide by the end of Year 10 or after the mocks. We work with families to make sure that decision is made on evidence — a student's actual topic-by-topic accuracy — rather than on a general impression.
Three papers, and only one without a calculator
UK GCSE maths (Edexcel 1MA1, AQA 8300, OCR J560) is three papers of 90 minutes each, all at the same tier. Paper 1 is non-calculator for Edexcel and AQA; for OCR it is Paper 2. That paper is where arithmetic fluency, fraction work and mental method show up, and it is the one students most often under-prepare for because revision at home is usually done with a calculator to hand. The main sitting is May/June, with a resit opportunity in November.
Where GCSE students actually lose marks
Grade 4 and grade 5 are different targets. A "pass" is grade 4, but many sixth forms and colleges require a 5. Students aiming vaguely at "passing" often land just below what they actually need. The non-calculator paper. Long multiplication, fractions, standard form and surds without a calculator are the classic lost marks. Multi-step and reasoning questions. Students who can perform each individual method separately often cannot see which sequence a worded question wants. "Show that" and reasoning marks. Method marks are available even when the final answer is wrong, but only if the working is written down. Topics taught in Year 9 and never revisited. Ratio, percentages and basic algebra underpin the whole paper and are often the weakest areas by Year 11. Time management. Three 90-minute papers reward students who move on from a stuck question and come back.

All of our tutors are QTS and/or PGCE qualified, with over ten years' experience in international and UK schools — so tier advice, mark scheme conventions and exam technique come from people who have taught and marked this qualification, not from a subject enthusiast. Progress is tracked topic by topic, so a weak area is visible before the exam rather than after it. Most students see a grade or more of improvement within around 60 days of consistent weekly lessons.

We also help families decide which tier is the right entry. Can you help with a November resit? Yes. Resit students often need a different approach — targeted work on the specific topics that cost marks, rather than starting the course again. Is it too late to start in Year 11? No, though the earlier the better. A student starting in September of Year 11 has time to change their grade; one starting in April has time to change a topic. Do you support students in the UAE? Yes, in British curriculum schools across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, with lessons scheduled around UAE school hours.
