Sequences and series revision for A-Level and International A-Level Maths

Sequences and series is one of the most formula-dependent topics on the A-Level course, and one of the easiest to lose marks on through using the right formula for the wrong thing — the sum when the question wanted the nth term, or the arithmetic formula on a geometric sequence. Sequences and series formulas you need to know

Arithmetic nth term. uₙ = a + (n − 1)d, where a is the first term and d the common difference. Arithmetic sum. Sₙ = (n/2)(2a + (n − 1)d), or (n/2)(a + l) when you know the last term l. Geometric nth term. uₙ = arⁿ⁻¹, where r is the common ratio. Geometric sum. Sₙ = a(1 − rⁿ)/(1 − r). Sum to infinity. S∞ = a/(1 − r), valid only when |r| < 1. Binomial expansion, positive whole power. The term in xʳ comes from the binomial coefficient nCr multiplied by the appropriate powers. Binomial expansion, any power. (1 + x)ⁿ = 1 + nx + [n(n − 1)/2!]x² + [n(n − 1)(n − 2)/3!]x³ + …, valid for |x|
