A-Level maths gives you a formula booklet in the exam, and it is a longer one than at GCSE. That creates a different problem: knowing a formula is in the booklet does not help if you cannot find it quickly, and a large part of the content is not in there at all. What goes on the sheet
The key results for your topics. In the notation the specification uses. Common misconceptions. Forgetting the constant of integration, differentiating a product term by term, losing a solution when squaring both sides, using degrees where the question is in radians. Hints on when each result applies. At A-Level the difficulty is rarely the algebra — it is recognising that a question wants the chain rule, or integration by parts, or a trigonometric identity before anything else can happen.
Which modules does it cover?
Pure. Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, and vectors — covering Pure 1 to Pure 4 of the International A-Level and the pure content of A-Level Maths. Statistics. S1 and S2 — representing data, probability, discrete and continuous random variables, the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions, correlation and regression, sampling and hypothesis testing. Mechanics. M1 and M2 — kinematics, forces and Newton's laws, momentum, moments, work, energy and power, and projectiles. Further Maths. The S2 and M2 modules above are the ones most often sat as part of International A-Level Further Maths, so the sheet works for Further Maths students as well.
What is in the A-Level formula booklet, and what is not?
You are given a formula booklet in the exam, but a great deal is assumed knowledge. Learn what is not in it first, because that is where marks are lost. Usually assumed, and needed constantly: The laws of indices and the laws of logarithms The derivatives of xⁿ, eˣ, ln x, sin x and cos x The chain, product and quotient rules Integration as the reverse of differentiation, and the constant of integration sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 and tan θ = sin θ / cos θ The discriminant b² − 4ac and what each case means The equation of a straight line, and the perpendicular gradient condition The equation of a circle, and completing the square to find its centre The factor and remainder theorems Usually given: the binomial expansion, the compound angle formulae, more advanced integrals, and standard statistical results including the normal and Poisson distributions. In statistics and mechanics, usually assumed: the mean and variance of a discrete random variable, the conditions for a binomial or Poisson model, suvat equations for constant acceleration, resolving forces, and the fact that momentum is conserved in a collision. The booklet differs between Edexcel A-Level and the International A-Level, and between modules, so check the one for your specification — but assume the list above is yours to remember.
How to actually learn A-Level formulae
Write them out from memory, by topic. Recall is the point. Reading a sheet tells you what looks familiar, not what you can produce under pressure. Learn derivations where they are short. Knowing where the quotient rule comes from means you can rebuild it if it goes; memorising it alone means it is either there or it is not. Pair each result with the question type that uses it. "Integration by parts" is not a fact, it is a response to a product of two functions. Practise identifying the method before doing any algebra. Read ten past-paper questions and say only which technique each one wants. That is where most marks are won and lost.
