Edexcel grade boundaries for GCSE, iGCSE, A-Level and International A-Level Maths

Every student who marks a past paper arrives at the same question. I scored 112 — is that any good? Grade boundaries are the answer, and they are also the reason the answer keeps changing. A boundary is the minimum mark needed for a grade in one particular exam series, and it is set after the papers have been marked, not before. If a paper turns out harder than intended, the boundary falls. If it is more accessible, the boundary rises. The grade is meant to represent the same standard of mathematics every year, even though the marks needed for it do not. The calculator below covers four Edexcel maths qualifications — GCSE Mathematics (1MA1), International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1), A-Level Mathematics (9MA0) and International A-Level Mathematics. Pick your course and a target grade, and it shows the range that grade has needed across recent series, along with what the top of that range works out to on each paper. If you are revising for an exam you have not sat yet, understand this first: the boundaries for your series do not exist and cannot be predicted. What you can do is aim to clear the highest mark that grade has recently required, and give yourself a few marks on top for a bad day.

The calculator shows a range rather than a single figure, because a single figure would be misleading. Boundaries move every series, sometimes by twenty marks or more on the same grade.

How each qualification is graded

Four qualifications, four different structures. Getting this right matters, because the same raw mark means completely different things across them. GCSE Mathematics (1MA1) is tiered, Foundation or Higher, and sits three papers of 80 marks for a total of 240. Paper 1 is non-calculator; Papers 2 and 3 allow a calculator. Higher runs from grade 9 down to 4 with an allowed grade 3; Foundation runs from 5 down to 1. International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is also tiered, but sits two papers of 100 marks for a total of 200, both with a calculator. The grade ranges work the same way as GCSE. A-Level Mathematics (9MA0) is untiered. Three papers of 100 marks, 300 in total, graded A* to E. Papers 1 and 2 are Pure Mathematics; Paper 3 is Statistics and Mechanics. International A-Level Mathematics is modular. Rather than one qualification with three papers, you sit six separate units of 75 raw marks each, and every unit is graded in its own right. The overall grade comes from your total on the Uniform Mark Scale, explained further down. Three points catch students out every year. The grade comes from the total, not from individual papers. On GCSE, iGCSE and A-Level there is no separate hurdle to clear on Paper 1. A weak first paper can be rescued by the others. International A-Level is the exception, because each unit stands alone. A percentage is not a grade. Scoring 60% on a Higher tier paper is a completely different outcome from 60% on Foundation, because the two tiers are built for different ranges. Always work in marks and compare against the boundary for your specification and tier. Some qualifications have more than one paper set. Alongside Papers 1H and 2H, iGCSE runs 1HR and 2HR in other regions, with separate boundaries. International A-Level does the same with its "Unit 1" and "Unit 1A" variants. They are not interchangeable, and the gap can exceed a grade.

GCSE Maths grade boundaries (Edexcel 1MA1)

On Higher tier, a grade 9 typically sits somewhere around 85 to 90% of the total 240 marks. The exact figure moves by as much as twenty marks between series, which is a quarter of a whole paper, and it shows how little use a single remembered number is. Further down the scale, a grade 7 usually lands somewhere near 60% and a grade 4 — the standard pass — around a fifth of the total marks. That last figure surprises people. It is low because Higher tier is designed for candidates targeting grades 4 to 9, so the paper contains a great deal of content aimed well above a pass, and a candidate can reach a 4 while leaving much of it untouched. On Foundation tier the picture is very different. A grade 5, the highest grade available on that tier, needs roughly three quarters of the paper. A grade 4 sits a little below that. Foundation candidates therefore need a much higher percentage for the same grade than Higher candidates do, which is the single most important thing to understand when comparing yourself to a friend on the other tier. There is also a November series, for resit candidates, and it consistently lands close to but slightly below the June series either side of it. iGCSE Maths grade boundaries (Edexcel 4MA1)

International GCSE Mathematics A is marked out of 200 across two papers, and it has an added complication: two separate paper sets in the same series. Alongside Papers 1H and 2H there are 1HR and 2HR, sat in other regions, awarded separately and with their own boundaries. The gap between the two sets is usually a handful of marks but has reached six or seven — enough to move a borderline candidate a whole grade. Neither set is consistently harder. In some series the regional papers need more marks for a grade 9; in others the standard papers do. There is no rule to apply, so check the paper reference printed in the top corner of your paper before comparing your mark to any published figure. On Higher tier a grade 9 tends to sit in the low-to-mid 80s as a percentage of the 200 marks. On Foundation tier a grade 5 needs roughly three quarters of the paper, and the two paper variants track each other far more closely on Foundation than on Higher. Two structural notes. International GCSE used to run January and June series, and now runs June and November. The November series has no regional paper set at all — if you are working through a November paper, the standard boundaries are the only ones that apply.

A-Level Maths grade boundaries (Edexcel 9MA0)

A-Level Mathematics is marked out of 300 across three papers of 100, with no tiers and a single paper set. An A* generally requires somewhere in the region of 84% of the total. Two things about A-Level Maths boundaries are worth dwelling on, and both are stable features of the qualification rather than quirks of one year. The spread between series is unusually wide. Grade A has moved as much as eighteen marks between its lowest and highest recent series, which is six marks a paper. Grade E has moved more than twenty. A-Level Maths papers vary in difficulty more than most subjects, and awarding corrects for it after the fact. The gap between A and A* is large. It is routinely over 40 marks — roughly fifteen a paper. Students sitting comfortably on an A often assume A* is within touching distance. It usually is not, and that gap is where A* revision effort has to go. AS Mathematics (8MA0) is marked out of 160 across two papers and is awarded A to E, with no A*.

International A-Level Maths grade boundaries

International A-Level Mathematics works differently from everything above, and the difference changes how you should revise.

Six units, each graded separately

You sit six units, each worth 75 raw marks: Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11), Pure Mathematics 2 (WMA12), Pure Mathematics 3 (WMA13), Pure Mathematics 4 (WMA14), Statistics 1 (WST01) and Mechanics 1 (WME01). Pure 1, Pure 2, Statistics 1 and Mechanics 1 are AS units, graded a to e. There is no a* at AS unit level. Pure 3 and Pure 4 are A2 units and do publish an a* boundary. Raw boundaries vary considerably between units and between sittings. A grade a on an AS unit usually needs somewhere in the region of 70 to 85% of the 75 marks available, and the spread within a single unit can exceed ten marks from one series to the next. Pure 4 is the most volatile of the six. Statistics 1 is worth singling out. In some series a grade a has required close to 90% of the paper — an exceptionally high threshold, reflecting a paper most candidates found accessible — while the alternative variant in the same series needed ten marks fewer. Ten marks out of 75 is well over a grade, which is why checking your unit code and variant matters so much here.

Understanding UMS in International A-Level Maths

This is the part almost nobody explains properly, and it matters more than the raw marks. Because International A-Level runs three sittings a year — January, June and October — students sitting the same unit in different months take papers of different difficulty. Pearson's answer is the Uniform Mark Scale. Your raw mark out of 75 is converted to a UMS score out of 100, and the UMS thresholds never change. For AS units, a is always 80 UMS, b is 70, c is 60, d is 50 and e is 40. For A2 units, a* is always 90 UMS, a is 80, b is 70, c is 60, d is 50 and e is 40. Your overall qualification is then awarded on your UMS total. A full International A-Level in Mathematics (YMA01) is 600 UMS, needing 480 for an A, 420 for a B, 360 for a C, 300 for a D and 240 for an E. International AS Mathematics (XMA01) is 300 UMS, needing 240 for an A. Two consequences follow. First, because the total is what counts, a weak unit can be offset by a strong one — 480 out of 600 is an average of 80 per unit, not a requirement of 80 in every one. Second, you will notice there is no A* threshold in that list. A* is not a simple UMS total at qualification level; it requires the overall A plus a further condition on your A2 unit performance. Check the current specification or ask your exams officer for the exact rule rather than assuming.

Why boundaries move from series to series

Four things drive it, and knowing them tells you how much weight to put on any past paper. The paper was harder or easier than intended. This is the main driver. Setting a paper to a precise difficulty is genuinely hard, and the boundary is the correction. The cohort changed. A larger or differently prepared entry shifts the distribution of marks, and awarding responds to it. The national grading standard shifted. Following the pandemic years, boundaries were set unusually generously and have since been brought back towards the pre-pandemic standard. Papers from the most disrupted years came with advance information about which topics would appear, and their boundaries were set far lower as a result. A student working through one of those papers today has none of that advantage, so their mark will understate how they would have done in that series. Boundaries are not on a one-way trend. They have risen across some stretches and fallen in others, sometimes by ten marks in a single year on the same grade. Anyone telling you boundaries always go up is guessing. The practical rule. How to use grade boundaries while you revise

The boundary itself is not the useful part. The gap is. Mark your paper against the official mark scheme and award yourself only the marks the scheme allows, not the marks you feel you deserve. Total across every paper in the qualification. Then find your target grade in the calculator above, for the right specification, tier and paper set. Now look at the gap. If you are fifteen marks short, fifteen marks is two or three questions. The question worth asking is which ones. At GCSE and iGCSE, number and algebra carry the largest share of the paper, and they are where careless marks accumulate fastest. A rounding instruction ignored. A percentage taken of the wrong amount. A bound read from the wrong end of an interval. Recovering marks there is usually quicker than attacking the hardest content on the paper. At A-Level, the Statistics and Mechanics paper is the one most often under-revised, because it sits last in the timetable and pure content dominates teaching time. It is also the easiest place to find marks late in the course. At International A-Level, the modular structure is an advantage if you use it. Pearson publishes grade boundaries on results day for each series, as a separate document per qualification family: GCSE, International GCSE, GCE for UK A-Level, and International Advanced Level. Earlier series are archived on the same page, so the complete series-by-series record is available there. The figures behind the calculator on this page are taken from those documents. If you sit with a different board, boundaries are published by AQA, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas on their own results pages, and are never interchangeable with Edexcel's.
