A-Level maths tuition for Edexcel, AQA and OCR students
The hardest part of A-Level Maths happens in the first term. Students arrive from GCSE having been rewarded for recognising question types and find themselves in a course that rewards constructing arguments. A strong grade 8 or 9 at GCSE is no guarantee of a comfortable start. The second difficulty is structural. The UK A-Level is linear — three two-hour papers sat together at the end of Year 13, covering everything. There is no banking of grades along the way, which puts a premium on retention across two years.
What the A-Level actually requires
Three papers, two hours each, sat at the end of the course. For Edexcel (9MA0): two Pure papers and one paper combining Statistics and Mechanics. Statistics and Mechanics are compulsory. Unlike the old modular A-Level, there is no choosing between them. Students who dislike one cannot avoid it. The large data set. Statistics questions draw on a prescribed data set that students are expected to be familiar with in advance. Proof is examined explicitly — proof by deduction, exhaustion and contradiction.
Where A-Level students actually lose marks
The Year 11 to Year 12 jump. Algebraic fluency that was adequate at GCSE is not adequate here. Most early struggles are not new content — they are old content, too slow. Method recognition. By Year 13 most students can integrate. Fewer can look at a question and know whether it wants substitution, parts, or an identity first. Mechanics treated as physics. Students who resolve forces without a clear diagram lose marks that the diagram would have earned. Statistics left until last. It is the most learnable part of the course and routinely the least revised. Retention across two years. Year 12 content is examined at the end of Year 13. Without deliberate revisiting, it fades. University offers. For maths, engineering, economics and computer science, the offer usually rests on this grade. That pressure is worth planning for rather than absorbing in April.

Lessons run in small interactive online groups, with bespoke one-to-one tuition available at a bespoke price for students working towards a specific offer or repairing a specific weakness. All tutors are QTS and/or PGCE qualified with over ten years teaching in international and UK schools — people who have taken cohorts through the full two years and know which topics come back to bite in Year 13. Because the A-Level is linear, we build in deliberate revisiting of Year 12 content rather than leaving it to the final term. Most students see a grade or more of improvement within around 60 days.
