Further Maths tuition for A-Level and International A-Level students
Further Maths is not a harder version of A-Level Maths. It is a second qualification, taken alongside the first, with its own content: complex numbers, matrices, hyperbolic functions, further calculus, and applied options beyond the standard course. That creates a specific problem. Students taking Further Maths are, almost by definition, strong mathematicians who have rarely needed help before. When they do hit difficulty — usually in the first term of Year 12, usually on complex numbers or matrices — they often have no experience of how to get unstuck.
Who takes Further Maths, and why it matters
University requirements. Some Mathematics degrees at competitive universities require Further Maths; many more list it as strongly preferred for maths, engineering, physics and computer science. Admissions tests. Students sitting MAT, TMUA or STEP are almost always Further Maths students, and that content overlaps with the preparation. It is taken alongside A-Level Maths, not instead of it. Both qualifications are sat, which means twice the content in the same two years. Route depends on the specification. UK Further Maths (Edexcel 9FM0) has compulsory Core Pure plus optional units. International A-Level Further Maths is modular, built from FP1, FP2, FP3 and additional applied units such as M2, M3, S2 and S3.
Where Further Maths students actually lose marks
Complex numbers, first encounter. The first genuinely unfamiliar idea most students meet. Argand diagrams, modulus-argument form and loci reward practice and punish assumption. Matrices and transformations. Mechanically straightforward, conceptually slippery — particularly invariant lines and points. Further calculus. Reduction formulae, improper integrals and arc length are where fluency built in A-Level Maths either holds or does not. Pace, not difficulty. Most Further Maths students are not struggling with capability; they are covering two A-Levels' content in the time normally given to one. Series availability on the International A-Level. FP1, FP2, FP3, M3 and S3 run in January and June only — not October. Students planning an October resit of a Further Pure unit discover this too late.

Further Maths students usually need something different from other students: not re-teaching, but a person who can keep pace and answer the harder question properly. Lessons run in small interactive online groups, and bespoke one-to-one tuition at a bespoke price is often the better fit here, since Further Maths students tend to arrive with a specific topic or admissions test in mind. Our tutors hold QTS and/or a PGCE with over ten years in international and UK schools, including teaching Further Maths to students applying to the most competitive courses.

Do you teach both UK and International A-Level Further Maths? Yes — Edexcel 9FM0 and the modular International A-Level route built from FP1, FP2, FP3 and applied units. Should my child take Further Maths? It depends on the degree they are aiming for and whether they enjoy maths enough to double the workload. It is a genuine advantage for competitive STEM applications and a genuine burden for a student who does not want it. Can you help with MAT, TMUA or STEP preparation? Yes. These reward a different skill from A-Level papers — extended problem solving rather than method recall — and need dedicated preparation. Is it too late to start Further Maths support in Year 13? No, but the content is cumulative. Year 12 Further Pure underpins everything in Year 13. Do you teach the Further Pure units for the International A-Level? Yes, including FP1, FP2 and FP3. Note that these are only examined in January and June.
