This topic converts between currencies using exchange rates and solves 'best buy' problems comparing unit prices to find the best value. It's examined right across GCSE and iGCSE Maths. Work through it free on eClassroom, with clear worked examples and instantly-marked questions that build your confidence for the exam.
How you do it
For currency, multiply or divide by the rate depending on which way you are going. For best value, work out the price per single unit for each option and compare — the cheaper per unit wins, whatever the pack size.
Before you start
The groundwork here is ratio and the four operations. It is Foundation and Higher tier material at GCSE and iGCSE. It reappears throughout real-life problem solving.
What you learn
An exchange rate tells you how much of one currency you get for another. To convert pounds to euros, multiply by the rate. To convert from a foreign currency back to pounds, divide by the exchange rate — the reverse of multiplying. To compare deals, work out the price for the same amount — the price per 100 g, per litre or per item. The course works through exchange rates, converting back and best value for money. Every section has instant-feedback practice questions matched to Edexcel iGCSE 4MA1 and the other major GCSE boards, and the course finishes with full exam-style questions you mark yourself.
