This topic finds the mean, median, mode and range from a list of raw data and chooses the most appropriate average to represent a set of values. It's a core topic in GCSE and iGCSE Maths with Edexcel and the other major boards. How you do it
The mean is the total divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the list is in order — order it first, always. The mode is the most common value. The range is the largest minus the smallest.

What you learn
Before you can draw a chart or find an average, you need to know what type of data you have — it decides which methods and diagrams are even allowed. Qualitative (categorical) data describes a quality in words — eye colour, favourite sport, brand of car. Continuous data can take any value in a range — height, mass, time. Primary data is collected by you, for your own purpose — a survey you carry out, measurements you take. The course works through qualitative and quantitative, discrete and continuous and primary and secondary data.
